Entirely carved antique box for playing cards with inlaid, enameled miniature cards on top, ca 1880.
If you are a collector of rare and stylish hand carved Black Forest antiques in general and/or a collector of rare boxes for playing cards in particular then this work of beauty could be yours to enjoy soon. The detailed leafs and branches on top and the wicker fence pattern all around are in very good condition. That quality in detail and the rarity of this box combined with the unique, handcrafted and hand-painted inlaid miniature cards on top of this box AND on top of the four smaller boxes (for keeping your chips) make this aesthetically pleasing box a real gem to own, use and to look at. Apart from a minor loss to one of the enameled miniature cards (the diamond one), some wear to the enameling of most miniature cards and some minor bending of the wood, this antique craftsmanship gem is in very good condition. It even comes with the original and perfect working lock and key for closing this box. The little key is actually hand-forged and the hand-crafted brass lock is as good as the day this box left the artisan's studio, almost 150 years ago. The former owner, in our view, had gone a little overboard in trying to be the best custodian, because he kept this unique antique in an aquarium-like glass dome. He certainly succeeded, because this carriage cigar holder is in THE best possible condition. The quality in the details and the overal balance of this coach mixed with the warm patina of the antique wood is what makes this aesthetically pleasing antique a real gem to own and to look at. We believe this work of antique craftsmanship is of museum quality and condition and no matter where you decide to have it on display, this work of art will never fail to impress.
